I walked into QVC Marine Field where Summer Sonic 2015 Tokyo take place. I was a little tired from tiring yet fun way of ride (and try to memorize) the Japan rail system, for the last 3 day. Nonetheless, I’m ready for a wild night. Attending concert in a different country is very different. When you get used to being stuck in traffic, trash everywhere, and the chance of people vandalize the venue is high, then experiencing watching a concert in the country famous for its cleanliness and order – Japan – is insane (ok, in a very good way). This is one event I would not want to miss out.
Summer Sonic Festival was founded in 2000 in Japan and now the 16th edition is still Japan’s leading dual – venue international music festival. Held simultaneously at Makuhari Messe and QVC Marine Field in Chiba near Tokyo and Osaka’s Maishima site on Aug 15 and 16, 2015. The bands first played in Osaka for the first day and go to Chiba the following day and vice versa.
Upon deciding carefully I went for the line up on 16th Aug 2015. Well, mainly because I think that the artists on the 16th line up would have very low – or zero – chance to visit Indonesia (or if it does it would be costly). The festival start at 11AM and audience already started to fill the area excited to be there early to catch their idols. I can see the hype where people bought and wear Summer Sonic merchandise at the concert. Also, to make it quirkier the promoter roll out a parade bus which visitor was sprayed by water from a water hydrant.
Headliners Imagine Dragons, Zedd, Magic! and Pharrell Williams performed at Marine Stage whilst Carly Rae Jepsen, Olly Murs, and Walk The Moon performed at Mountain Stage. In all, over 125 acts performed.
On Sunday festival where Zedd the German – Russian producer successfully make the stadium crammed with revelers as he played a house set that alternated between pop remixes and dance floor beats. I can see people happily dancing and don’t mind if they are out of air, which it was very crowded. You literally could touch the skin with the people beside you.
Next, Imagine Dragons. I was looking forward for their performance all day. The dwindling crowd showed how popular the band is in Japan. And I just know that this is not their first performance but 2nd since their 1st performance in 2013. Well-known tracks included “Gold,” “I Bet My Life” and their huge hit “Radioactive” was among the set of list they performed.
Finally, the artist that I have been waiting for, Pharrell Williams, successfully the closing act of Summer Sonic. Not only he brought his coterie of beautiful dancers and musician to perform but he invite audience from children to girls, to join him on stage. His encore of track list consist of not only the latest such as “Happy” but many from his 2014 release GIRL, including “Frontin”, “Marilyn Monroe”, “It Girl” and “Lose Yourself To Dance”. Also, if you’re a fan hearing the set of “Drop It Like It’s Hot, “Blurred Lines” and more from his previous album, the hype and excitement was priceless. Although, I seems to confuse when I was having fun dancing and cheering and some of audience just watch or maybe I have too many energy that I sang, jumped, and cheered for the last 6 hours was ok.
As the rain started pouring down, audience still busy dancing and have a night of their life. Finally, after a one and a half hour performance by Pharrell, at exactly 9PM (this I was surprised. Never been to any concert that finished at 9PM. Wow) the 2015 Summer Sonic is over with the last performance of Pharrell’s recently released “Freedom”.
